Iowa Bound

Wednesday Evening, Sept. 29
I had planned to stay in Crete tomorrow and talk to the middle school history classes but they were not interested in a presentation - therefore I am leaving in the morning.
The good news is that I figure I can be in Iowa in three days and with it will come a feeling of renewal. Nebraska is a wide state and though I have been walking at a pretty good clip it is not a state that is quickly traversed. It will be good to finally have it in my rear-view mirrors (I really do have mirrors).
I just ate great Chinese dinner at a restaurant across the street. Although I have been trying to eat healthily on this journey it hasn't been possible - mostly the issue has been simply trying to eat! At the moment it seems as if I can feel the vegetable nutrients coursing through my system and serves as a reminder of what I've been missing. I have a friend in Ohio that has promised me some home cooked meals and I'm going to take him up on it when I get there.
I would also add that I'm starting my third pair of shoes tomorrow. To be polite to the motel staff, I took the old ones pictured above and tossed them into the dumpster. You can guess why.
Thanks to my wife for sending them.

  1. Hi Raymond,
I talked to one of our history teachers today and told Her about the response you have been getting from school on your journey. when i read that it did sadden me and I hated for you to have to go through that.

I will tell you that once you get to Ohio you have a school that is interested in having you visit and talk to classes. and that school is Fort Frye Local. If you are at Donna and Larry's I will come and get you.

I don't know the basis for people's decision to decline your offer. I do know that there are many people who are interested. so keep walking and get to Ohio.

    Love you,
    Beth

  2. Hope your new shoes see you through miles and miles of safe and interesting travels

I hope you do get to visit some schools...it is sad that those in the decision making process don't see the value of your expertise.

  3. Ray,

I am fairly persuasive person and if you will provide me your route, what cities you will be in when I would be happy to call schools and arrange for you to speak to the students. I can just see you speaking at a middle school assembly about the Bill of Rights in your time period appropriate attire. I really think I could do this and you would get some success. I would also like to help you with internet press releases for each city you are coming to. I would do this because I believe in your cause. I am so inspired by what you are doing that I would love to help. I hope you will let me. Please email me back and I will send you my phone number. I think we just need to create a bit more publicity, create a face book page and a kit of how teachers can tie your message into their teaching plan. Good luck and I hope to hear from you.
